✱ Overview
What is Glutathione?
Glutathione is a tripeptide made by the body from glutamate, cysteine and glycine. It is found in high concentrations inside cells, where it neutralizes reactive molecules and helps maintain redox balance.
Because the body makes its own glutathione, research focuses on whether supplementation meaningfully raises tissue levels — and whether that matters clinically. Evidence for injectable supplementation is limited.
✱ Mechanism
How it works
Reduced glutathione (GSH) donates electrons to neutralize reactive oxygen species, becoming oxidized glutathione (GSSG). Glutathione reductase, using NADPH, recycles GSSG back to GSH — a cycle that keeps cellular defenses running.
Glutathione also helps conjugate certain compounds for elimination in the liver and supports the function of immune cells such as lymphocytes.
✱ Key research areas
What the science says — and how sure it is.
01
Antioxidant defense
Established clinical evidence
Glutathione's role in neutralizing reactive oxygen species is foundational biochemistry.
02
Glutathione recycling
Established clinical evidence
The GSH/GSSG cycle and its dependence on NADPH are well characterized.
03
Immune-cell biology
Preliminary findings
Lab studies show lymphocyte function depends on glutathione status. Clinical effects of supplementation are unclear.
04
Skin-related research
Preliminary findings
Small trials of oral and topical forms report modest pigment changes. Injectable use for lightening is not approved and has drawn FDA warnings.
05
Disease prevention
Experimental hypothesis
No robust evidence that injectable glutathione prevents disease.
